Tools to guide and support discussions with students and families in preparation for high school included on this page:

  • Checklist for Migrant Educators: Introduction to High School for Incoming 9th Graders (English)
  • Family Resource: Introduction to High School for Incoming 9th Graders (English and Spanish)

Intended Use/Outcomes

Resources are:

  • intended to be used as tools to assist Migrant Educators and METS offices in having supportive discussions with students and families in preparation for 9th grade;
  • not exhaustive, as each NYS-MEP student’s situation is unique;
  • intended to supplement school district programming in relation to high school orientation;
  • intentionally provided as PDF and Word documents, so that users may tailor the documents and add their own ideas.

Subtopics within the Checklist for Migrant Educators include:

  • Calendar Reminders
  • Sharing Encouraging Thoughts With Students
  • Your School
  • Building A Personal Support System
  • Daily Schedule and Bus Transportation
  • Key Words/Phrases for Students to Use in School
  • Topic Areas for Discussion and Awareness including: Schedule/Planning, Procedural, Safety and Protocols, Technology, Academics, Parent/Guardian Tips, Other Resources, Acknowledgements, Intended Use/Outcomes, and Background.

Note: The Family Resource handout is formatted as a blank version of the Educator Checklist, without all the Educator notes, and intended for students and families to follow along and write as the Educator facilitates the conversation using the Educator Checklist. The Educator Checklist provides page references to help facilitate and reference for students/families. The Family Resource also includes Parent/Guardian Tips about communication, setting your child up for success, and homework help.

Check out this video tutorial for how to use the resources, which was recorded as a NYS-MEP statewide professional development workshop in February 2024.

We appreciate your comments and feedback for future iterations. This type of resource is constantly evolving!
