The lesson warms up with counting blocks to match the Counting Game cards, and using a Circle View Finder to find circles in the room. The story, “City Shapes,” a Level C wordless book from the Reading A-Z website is about finding shapes in buildings and on the streets of a city. In the activity connected to the story, students cut rectangles then arrange and glue them into a city scene.
Students use a Rectangle Viewfinder to find objects shaped like circles in the story, the picture and from the room. Students use a Rectangle Poster to draw the objects found. (My Rectangle Poster is available in four home languages: English, Burmese, Karen, and Spanish.)
Parents receive Parent Information about Shapes in four home languages: English, Burmese, Karen, and Spanish. When possible, Educators can leave a copy of the story, “City Shapes,” with the family to read with their children.

“City Shapes” is a Level “C” book from the Learning A-Z website, also known as RAZ and Reading A-Z. While this is only available in English, it has a wordless version you can use with any language. Note: If this story is unavailable, substitute with another story about buildings or shapes.
Resource Files Below: Click on the numbered, orange file names below the heading, “Book Resource Files,” to download. Individual file names highlight the user and printing needs:
- “Educator” means the printout will be reused with other students, so only need to print one copy per educator
- “Student” means the file is consumable, so need to print one copy per student
- “Parent” means files to leave with each family, so need to print one copy per family
Since this lesson has multiple files in languages other than English, the individual files are followed by “Language” Sets. These reorganize all of the student and parent files (translated and non-translated) into four home language sets: English, Burmese, Karen, and Spanish.
