Comprehension: Learner, Text, Teacher

Students bring their unique prior knowledge to every learning situation. This knowledge is critical while students are learning new information. Since educators have a key role in facilitating students’ learning, they can select and utilize relevant information to support learning. Therefore, when teachers understand the most important information to draw from text, they can alert and build students’ knowledge of this information.

Resources outlined here have been compiled and developed for the NYS-MEP Comprehension Professional Learning Community. Over the course of seven meetings, led by Kathleen Lord, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Graduate Programs in Literacy, in the Department of Teaching and Learning at SUNY New Paltz, participants will examine aspects of comprehension and learning new information. Each session will provide an in-depth view of the science underlying the learning process through the lens of the learner, the text, and the teacher.

Kathleen has generously offered for us to share the resources from each meeting. Content will be posted as sub-pages below after they occur.
