Description

With the ongoing statewide school closures in response to COVID-19, there are many changes to graduation and course requirements for the current school year. This includes the NYS Education Department’s decisions to suspend administration of the Grades 3-8 ELA and Math assessments for the remainder of this school year as well as the cancellation of the June 2020 administration of Regents Exams in March 2020.

Melissa L. Montague, Associate in Instructional Services at the New York State Education Department will provide us with a 20-30 minute update on graduation and course requirements during COVID-19. The final 30 minutes will be reserved for questions.

**This meeting is not eligible for Continuing Teacher Leader Education (CTLE) credit.

This meeting is for NYS-MEP staff only. The content is geared towards serving the migrant populations in New York State as defined under Title I, Part C and the approved State Service Delivery Plan, and may NOT be appropriate to all situations.

Post Meeting Information

Resources below include the presentation slides (in color and in black & white), and a copy of the Regents Examination and Graduation Requirements Questions related to COVID-19 Closure from the NYSED website. Each slide of the presentation provides valuable information about exemptions and meeting diploma requirements during the COVID-19 Closure.

METS staff need to be in contact with District and BOCES Guidance Counselors about individual students meeting the guidelines.
Slide 3

A great deal of interest centered on Slide 3’s third scenario about students who have passed the course, but failed the Regents in previous attempt(s), can be eligible for exemption if they intended to take the Regents this June. Slide 4 -  lists three ways to determine the intent:

  • Student informed school s/he wished to retake the examination; or
  • Student was preparing to take the examination (receiving academic intervention, supplemental instruction or tutoring of some kind); or
  • Student took the examination in June 2019, August 2019 or January 2020 in an attempt to pass or better his/her score.
Slide 11

Provides information about how students can be exempt from the three-part technical assessment for graduation purposes.

Slide 12

Provides some detail for the district to make an individual determination in regards to granting the CTE Technical Endorsement. Note: BOCES programs are working on how to be able to meet the professional trade requirements, that are separate from high school graduation requirements..
