Description

Preparing Students for Success in Geometry Class resources contain four major topic areas, materials, and coordinating lessons meant to set students up for success prior to entering geometry class. The four topics were chosen based on what students should know as prerequisites for high school geometry. Each topic contains a Student Handout, Teacher Guide, and coordinating video lessons! These resources are great to use over the summer or during breaks. In this workshop, we will navigate through the materials and explore your questions about how to use them with students.

The videos and materials were developed by Kimberly McLean, HS Mathematics Teacher and Class of 2021 Advisor at Spencerport High School.

Objectives

  • Understand the foundational skills identified for students entering HS geometry.
  • Know where to access the videos and handouts.
  • See examples for using the video lessons.

Materials and Videos are available on the NYS-MEP website. The four topics include:

  1. Basics of Geometry and Triangles
  2. Perimeter, Area, and Volume
  3. Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
  4. Transformations and Similar Triangles

In addition to providing distance learning opportunities for her students during the Covid Quarantine, she has also provided online professional development to teachers in the state of Maryland. Outside of teaching, she is an Advisor for the Class of 2021 and for the Spencerport Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Post Workshop Follow Up

On Tuesday, April 21, we held a workshop called Preparing Students for Success in Geometry Class. Thank you to those who were able to attend, and we’d love any feedback about how you are using the resources.

The Student Handout and the Teacher Guide are the same thing, except the teacher guide has answers filled in with tips for teaching. These resources are great to use over the summer or during breaks. Materials and video links are available on the NYS-MEP’s website: https://www.nysmigrant.org/resources/library/geometryprep

The facilitator guide which accompanies the resources online outlines step-by-step instructions for lesson sequences by topic. Below is an example. Participants in Tuesday’s workshop found the resources clear and easy to follow along with as we showed clips of videos and examples of the coordinating Student Handouts.

Don’t forget the calculator trick – Our presenter pointed out that if you don’t have a scientific calculator handy, most smartphones have a version of their own that is sufficient for many geometry problems that you need a calculator for. Just enter the standard calculator app, and turn it sideways so that you are looking at it horizontally.
