K-8 ELA

Reading for Fluency - Highlight of the Month

Activities to Teach Letter Names and Letter Sounds - The ELA Resource Library identifies activities from the Florida Center for Reading Research that work in one-on-one instruction, and link to a great ABC game on the Starfall website. Click here to read more.

Free App Version - Search for “Starfall ABCs” in your app store. Select “skip” when the setup asks for a credit card.

ENL Emphasis – The Starfall ABC game matches the letters with sounds, words, and pictures, supporting English learners.

Reading for Comprehension - Highlight of the Month

Did you know that Part 3 of the ELA regents exam is text analysis? You can introduce your elementary and middle school students to using text structures with the  "on-demand" professional development module described below.

Click here for a simple way to introduce your students to text structures. In the nine-minute video, “Reading Comprehension of Informational Text: Text Structure,” Kathleen M. Lord, Ph.D., explains how to teach text structures so students understand them. You can download the accompanying graphic organizers and instruction that simplify these text structures: cause and effect; compare and contrast; problem and solution; description; sequence; and question and answer.

K-8 Math

The EngageNY curriculum schedules 7th grade students for Expressions and Equations at this time of year. The NYS-MEP website hosts two math PD modules about teaching expressions and equations.

Go to Expressions and Equations Part 1, a 40-minute video, to see how to use algebra tiles and T-charts to help middle school students gain conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction of negatives and positives.

Go to Expressions and Equations Part 2, a 25-minute video, to see how to use algebra tiles so students will understand how variables behave in the same relationships with each other, as do numbers.
