The Mohawk Regional Migrant Education and Tutorial Support Services Program provides a summer program to all the families and individuals in the program.
All the preschoolers and school age students have visits from program staff at their homes throughout the summer. The tutors bring academic materials and some hands-on learning materials.
All the families are offered an opportunity to attend a family event. Three different options were available for families depending on where they live in the region. The three locations were Lake Moreau State Park in Gansevoort, N.Y., Lake Chalet in Bridgewater, N.Y., and Lake Taghanic State Park in Ancram, N.Y.
During these events, students and their families were able to participate in park activities. A parent meeting was held, and parents were given materials and discussed making family connections. This broad topic allowed for conversations with parents about connecting with school personnel. A blank chart was given to families to complete once school starts.
Parents and students created arts and craft projects, one using their initials and another with clay pots that detail their family. These helped tie the families’ heritage together.
A small group of students participated in a stone carving class at Hunter Mountain.
The stone carving activity connected the students from the area to a local carver and sculptor. Using the Catskill Mountain bluestone, students got to try out this art form and take home a small piece of the mountain.
