Workshop Description
Students in New York State (NYS) have a new path to financing college with the new NYS DREAM Act. Join Katia Chapman and Jonnathan Salgado to hear how the first semester of New York’s DREAM Act is unfolding.
This workshop will introduce participants to the Act’s eligibility, highlight common questions, identify challenges, and provide guidance on how to help interested high school students prepare to apply. With the mobility of our students, presenters will also share new pathways for NYS graduates who have since moved out of state.
The presentation will also review the SUNY College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at Oneonta and distinguish between New York State financial aid and Federal financial aid for college.
Objectives/Learning Targets:
- Before NYS DREAM ACT: To briefly review the migrant-specific College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP)
- To understand which grants are NYS-funded versus federally funded, to better assist students who become eligible through the NYS DREAM Act.
- To understand the NYS DREAM Act Eligibility and Application Steps.
- To learn that there are options for mobile students, such as the migrant population, to apply for out-of-state, but students would need to work with experts in financial aid.
