The NYS-MEP is excited to host the virtual Out-of-School-Youth (OSY) Spring workshop series with life skills content mixed with online English classes! Four events are scheduled for 2024. Migrant Educators: Please invite your OSY students to participate in any or all of the workshops! Find out more below.

  • Zoom meeting information will be sent to students and Migrant Educators via email and WhatsApp prior to each event.

Green Light Law (For OSY and Parents/Guardians)

Tuesday, February 13, 2024 (7-9pm)
Language: Presented in Spanish (and English consecutively, as needed)
Presenter: Worker Justice Center of New York (WJCNY) Presenters: Jarim Virgen, Julie Dragonetti, and Gloribell Figueroa  

During this workshop, our WJCNY presenter will explain the process for obtaining a driver’s license while highlighting many key points of the NYS Green Light Law. We will conclude with a Q&A session. This workshop will not be recorded.

Communication in the Workplace

Tuesday, March 12, 2024 (7:30-9pm)
Language: Presented in Spanish (and English consecutively, as needed)
Presenter: Astrid Poulton and Liam Hanehan

During this workshop, participants will hear from a farm owner about the best way to communicate with your boss at work, how your boss can help you, what information you should share with your boss, and more. There will be a short Q&A session with the farm owner, so that participants have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have. During the English class portion of the workshop, participants will learn dairy farm and other agricultural vocabulary, as well as some common phrases that can be used to communicate in the workplace. 

Going to the Grocery Store

Tuesday, April 9, 2024 (7:30-9pm)
Language: Presented in Spanish (and English consecutively, as needed)
Presenter: Emily Callaghan, Astrid Poulton, and Travis Williamson

In this presentation, students will receive a life skills lesson on different ways to obtain groceries including grocery delivery apps, grocery pickup at Walmart, and self-check-out. The English class portion will focus on food, including important phrases to use at the grocery store and verbs such as: like, have, need, and want.

Nutrition & Health

Tuesday, May 14, 2024 (7:30-9pm)
Language: Presented in Spanish (and English consecutively, as needed)
Presenter: Tracey Messinger and Elena Alonso 

During this workshop, participants will hear from a health care advocate about the importance of a nutritious diet and regularly visiting the doctor. There will be a short Q&A session, so that participants have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have. During the English class portion of the workshop, participants will learn how to make an appointment and how to leave a voicemail.

Learning English Independently

Tuesday, July 2, 2024 (7:30-9pm)

Presenter: Emily Callaghan

During this workshop, participants will hear about strategies for learning English independently. Find out about the resource booklet Simply Speaking, which is available for free on the NYS-MEP website. The presenter will give tips for learning a language, including how to use Google Translate, how to use other useful apps to learn English, and daily strategies for practicing English. During the English class portion of the workshop, participants will learn some basic greetings and how to introduce themselves in English. These lessons will be taught using Simply Speaking

Ordering Food at a Restaurant

Tuesday, September 3, 2024 (7:30-9pm)
Language: Presented in Spanish
Presenter: Victor Pacheco

In this presentation, students will receive a life skills lesson on tips for ordering food in-person, over the phone, and when using websites or apps. The English class portion of our time will focus on food, including important phrases to use when ordering, such as "I would like" and "I want." 


The content of these presentations are geared towards serving the migrant populations in New York State as defined under Title I, Part C and the approved State Service Delivery Plan, and may NOT be appropriate to all situations
