Four-Year-Old Students

4 year old child development framework

This section has child development information for four-year-old students to help Migrant Educators understand skills that a four-year-old student may be ready to learn. The child development guidelines can support Migrant Educators when engaging parents and family in a conversation about their children.

NOTE: Children are expected to grow and learn at different rates. The child development information is best used as a guideline for working with students, as well as their parents and family.

Center for Disease Control Milestones/Act Early Your Child at 4 Years. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has development guidelines for multiple ages, from two months old through five years old. The CDC created still photos and short video clips of children doing these milestone activities.

The CDC has Milestone handouts for available on the CDC website in English and Spanish. Follow the links to the CDC Milestones for four-year-olds in the language you want to open.

NYS-MEP Handout for Parents with a Four-year-old Child. The NYS-MEP simplified the CDC Milestones into a format that is easier to read and enables some flexibility in the format. Look under “Book Resource Files” to click on the format and language you want to open.

  • One Page Format: This handout has the information for five child development domains on one page.
  • Split-Page Format: This format divides the domains across four pages. Thus making it possible for Migrant Educators to focus on a smaller piece of child development information at a time, when sharing with parents and families.
